At the recent local elections, opinion polls suggested that potholes were the number one issue for voters at a local level.

In some places, they've become such a problem that people have take to fixing them themselves.

While this sounds helpful, you may be putting yourself in danger and leaving yourself liable to any issues that arise from DIY repairs.

Instead, the best thing to do is report the pothole:

  • To report a pothole in England or Wales, enter the postcode of the road where you found the pothole on the GOV.UK website, external.

  • In Northern Ireland, you can report potholes by marking them on a map (here, external).

  • And in Scotland, you can report potholes by selecting the relevant local council (here, external).

And if your car gets damaged by a pothole, you may be entitled to compensation - to hear consumer expert Holly Hamilton's advice, watch it back on iPlayer here.

To help deal with the problem, the government has introduced a 'Red, Amber, Green' road maintenece ranking system for the councils in England which you can view here, external.

And you can find out more about how they've calculated those rankings here, external.
